[ translate ]

When American and Allied troops advanced into western Bohemia in May 1945 liberating cities like Pilsen and Susice, local citizens hastily hand sewed flags from whatever textiles were available to welcome their liberators. Very few still survive. This irregularly assembled cloth flag displaying vertical blue and red panels fabricated from coarse bunting, showing light fraying, minor hole damage and moderate age discoloration throughout. Hoist corner features a reinforced off white canvas triangle with ink-stamped German blackletter text reading Guard stitched over the seams. Lower red field exhibits a small, yellow embroidered unit mark M in thread, possibly an underground cell. Solid construction with visible hand stitching along the hemmed borders. Length 29 inches, height 16 inches.
