Extremely Rare Natural Fossil Coral Egg, Australia, 923.25 ct- 184.65 g

The Very Rare Fossil Corals are a natural type of gemstone fossils formed from fossil corals. The proper name for fossil corals is "Agate Coral" or "Agate Fossil Coral" because the coral remains are gradually replaced by agate, a type of naturally occurring chalcedony or microcrystalline quartz, during formation. When prehistoric corals are fossilized by replacement with agate, the fossil corals are formed by hardened deposits left by silicon-rich waters.

Fossil corals are formed by the process of replacement, where calcium carbonate (coral) is replaced by silica. This unique preservation process can result in varying mineral concentrations from specimen to specimen. Silica can range from light, amorphous opal to dense form of chalcedony. Therefore, fossil coral specimens can have slightly different densities depending on the exact mineral concentration.

Agate fossil corals can exhibit a wide range of natural colors, ranging from white and pink to brown, gray, black, yellow and red. Coral color can vary greatly within a single stone depending on weathering, oxidation and the original mineral content.
