Inscription: At the lower part signed in the printing plate: "Dessiné par J. B. Piranesi / Gravé par F. Piranesi L'an 12/1804". At the lower part inscribed in the printing plate: "Vue de la Taverne de Pompeia, qui a pour enseigne un Priape. L'on appercoit l'interieur par les deux entrées".

Date: 1804

Description: The artwork shows a detailed depiction of a landscape of ruins in the centre of Pompeii. In the foreground, two figures interact with a horse; behind them, a path lined with the remains of ancient architecture opens up with a quadriga rushing towards it. The atmosphere is characterised by the play of light and shadow and the dramatic cloudy sky.

Condition: Rather good condition. There is a full-page vertical crease in the centre. Large pale liquid stain at the top of the image. Likewise in the lower left corner and u right. Slight foxing. The corners of the sheet slightly bumped and creased. Browned and slightly soiled along the upper edge of the sheet and uncut. Tiny marginal tear in lower centre. Slight rubbing visible in the image.
