Author:
Title: FIGHT AGAINST CRIME No. 17
Place Published:
Publisher:Story [Indicia: Story Comics, Inc.]
Date Published: January, 1954
Description: CGC certified: VG/Fine (5.0). Off-white to white pages. Grader notes: Light bends to cover; light creasing to cover; very light spine splits to cover.

CGC Census: 23 graded copies (22 Universal, 1 Restored).

GPAnalysis: A 5.0 sold for $227 in 6/16; a 4.0 sold for $515 in 9/23.

Credits: Cover: Unknown artist (Bob Baer inks?). Art: Doug Wildey, Ed Goldfarb. Overstreet: "EC story swipe, Shock Suspenstories #9; knife through neck cover." Wildey Cops Crandall: Crazy mag, violent AF. Knife-in-neck cover; hanging panels; doc carves man's heart out; man snuffs fat wife and uses her corpse to insulate the walls. The horror highlight is Doug Wildey's "Trapped," a blatant swipe of Reed Crandall's classic "Carrion Death," in which a killer, cuffed to a corpse, ends up as buzzard chow. Wildey does Crandall's version justice, complete with gory eye socket and fleshless rib cage, all delineated in his slick, illustrative style. Wildey may have derived perverse pleasure from aping EC, as years later he openly lamented the fact that in his comics career he worked for pretty much every publisher except "the good one," EC (See "Wildey Rides Again" text feature by John Weeks, Rio at Bay #1, Dark Horse, 1992).

"Wildey's 'Trapped,' from Fight Against Crime #17, is a decent copy-job of 'Carrion Death' from Shock SuspenStories #9. This is the oft-reprinted EC tale wherein a murderer has to drag the corpse of the policeman to which he is handcuffed across the desert. The last two panels of Story's story are virtually identical to those of EC. (Was EC too busy fending off the Senate committee and all its minions to be pursuing its imitators in court?)." – George Suarez, Tales Too Terrible To Tell #5. NEC: 1992, p. 36.______________________________________________________________
