FINE PRESENTATION PIPE TOMAHAWK MADE BY WILLIAM BUCHELE.

A wonderful contemporary decorated Pipe tomahawk by William Buchele. Similar tomahawks are known to date to the mid-late 18th century, styled after the French Pipe Tomahawks. This example was made circa mid-20th century by the well-known maker William Buchele (deceased), who was also the author of the book "Recreating the American Longrifle". Buchele was a talented craftsman who created many examples of American longrifles, tomahawks/belt-axes, and scrimshawed powder horns. The head on this example is mostly iron with attractive filework and light scroll engraving. There is a silver inlay featuring a snake, moon, eagle, and double arrow, with wire inlay around the moon and the eagle. On a smooth curly maple haft with a silver mouth piece. The head, including the bowl, measures 6 - 1/2" long and the haft measures 17 - 3/4" long. The overall condition is very fine. The iron and brass head shows an attractive patina that has been lightly cleaned to show the fine inlay and engraving. The haft has very fine engraved silver with minimal handling evidence.
