FINE RUSSIAN ICON OF THE TRANSFIGURATION, 19TH C. Comprising a larger size Russian icon depicting the Transfiguration. At top center is shown Christ atop Mount Tabor standing within a mandrola, on the left the Old Testament Prophet Elijah, and on the right the Old Testament Prophet Moses holding the tablets engraved with the ten commandments. Below are depicted the Apostles Peter, James, and John, who fall to earth in awe of the sight. The borders further painted with the family saints Vasily, the female saint Princess Alexandra, the venerable Maria of Egypt, and the Holy Martyr Irina. Painted in a type of 16th century revivalist style with moss green borders, the upper margin inscribed in ornate Slavonic text PREO OBRAZHENIE GOSPODNE (TRANSFIGURATION OF THE LORD). The offered icon depicts the event as mentioned in the Gospels of Matthew (17: 1-9) and elsewhere. 14.4 inches x 12.25 inches (36 x 31 cm).
