FINE STROGANOV RUSSIAN ICON ARCHANGEL MICHAEL C. 1700. Here Michael is depicted as an armor clad winged warrior holding a fiery sword atop stylized clouds within an arched reserve. At top center, the Holy Visage, and the upper margin inscribed in gilt "ARCHANGEL MIKHAIL." The wings and armor finely rendered in gilt with fine detailing and overall in the typical Stroganov School style. The panel constructed with double raised borders (kovcheg), typical of icons from this period. A very fine icon. 12.25 inches x 10.75 inches (31 x 27.5 cm).
