Small quarto. Illustrated by Hering, E. (illustrator). The first complete appearance of H. G. Wells’s classic dystopian science fiction novel. It precedes all other editions. In two volumes (Vol. XXX – November 1900 – April 1901; Vol. XXXI – May–October 1901). 680, [8] pp; 676 pp. Binding in very good condition, period synthetic (c. 1901) in Burgundy color. Endpapers with floral-inspired design. It bears two labels from the private library of King Vittorio Emanuele III of Savoy. They were in the library of the Palazzo di Racconigi in Italy, as proven by their registration numbers: LIII.
Illustrations by E. Hering. The basis for two films, TV adaptations and the inspiration for many other science‑fiction stories. Also includes contributions by Jack London, Joel Chandler Harris, Rudyard Kipling and others. Absolutely immaculate copies, like new. A brilliant and fine set. Barron, Anatomy of Wonder, 1981, 1-175.
