FIVE ENGLISH TRIAL ENAMEL-GROUND JASPERWARE OVAL MEDALLIONS AND A BLACK JASPERWARE MEDALLION late 18th Century, unmarked, attributed to Wedgwood, including a lilac-ground jasperware portrait medallion of Lady Charlotte Finch (1725-1813), by Joachim Smith 1774, after a painting by Thomas Hudson and Sir Godfrey Kneller, h: 1 3/4 in.; a claret-ground jasperware medallion, 'Achilles Staying the Chariot of Victory', w: 1 in.; a fuchsia-ground jasperware medallion, 'Corybantes Striking Their Bucklers to Prevent the Cries of the Infant Jupiter from Being Heard by Saturn', w: 1 in.; an olive-green ground jasperware medallion, an equestrian battle scene, incised no. 424 w: 1 in.; and a black jasperware medallion of a classical figure wearing a cloak, w: 1 in. Catalogue Note:
These medallions are documented in a letter from Frederick Rathbone to Mrs. Spranger dated the 16th of November 1895. They were once part of an ensemble mounted and displayed together with additional pieces. Prior to being disassembled, they were illustrated in the Zeitland auction catalogue of 2007.

Lady Charlotte Finch was the accomplished and much loved Royal Governess to the children of George III and Queen Charlotte. On an encounter in Florence in 1740, Horace Warpole remarked that she was "the cleverest girl in the world".
