F.J. Thornton & Co. Ltd. 250 Grm. Cased Analytical Beam Balance.
A cased analytical beam balance manufactured by F.J. Thornton & Co. Ltd. of Birmingham, England. This scientific instrument is constructed from brass with black-finished steel components, supported by a central brass pillar. The horizontal beam features circular cut-outs and is engraved to the left side with 250 GRM. and to the right side with BRITISH MADE. The top edge of the beam is graduated with a linear scale from 0 to 10 on either side of the pivot.
The balance is housed within a mahogany and glass display case featuring five glass panels and a solid wooden base. A central control knob is located on the exterior front of the mahogany base to engage the mechanism. The instrument includes two circular brass pans suspended from open-frame brass hangers. A white rectangular plate at the base of the central pillar is printed in black with F.J. THORNTON & CO. LTD. BIRMINGHAM. Below the central pointer, a white plastic scale is mounted with black vertical graduations. A plumb bob is suspended from the central mechanism to indicate level.
More Information
The instrument is in very good cosmetic condition. The brass components exhibit a natural aged patina and some surface oxidation, most notably to the interior of the two suspended pans (photo 6 and 7). The mahogany case shows minor scuffing to the wooden frame and top surface consistent with age (photo 10), but the glass panels remain intact with no visible cracks or chips. All mechanical components, including the adjustment weights and plumb bob, appear present and correctly aligned.
