Date/Period: 1915
Publisher: FISK UNIVERSITY PRESS, Nashville

Additional Information: Nashville: FISK UNIVERSITY PRESS, 1915.Signed by Author(s). 1st Edition 'Folk Song of the American Negro'-- written by John W. Work, Jr., a Professor of Latin & History at Fisk University and collector/promoter of Negro spirituals and slave songs. Published by Fisk University Press in 1915. Prof. Work was the first African American to dedicate himself to preserving Negro spirituals and slave songs and strove to introduce this music to a wider audience. Negro spirituals and slave songs were controversial at the time because many former slaves held strong opinions and emotions regarding the music's close connection to their enslavement. While studying at Fisk University, Prof. Work reassembled the Jubilee Singers, a Black-only choral group that had been disbanded 20 years earlier and toured with them promoting Negro spirituals and slave songs. John Wesley Work, Jr. is thought to be the author of 'Go Tell It on the Mountain'-- celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ; arguably the best known African American song in the hymnals of many church denominations to this day. 'Folk Song of the American Negro'-- 131 pages, illustrations, music, portraits.
