KILLADOON HOUSE, PROPERTY FROM AN IMPORTANT IRISH ESTATE

FOLLOWER OF LUCA CARLEVARIJS
VENICE, A VIEW OF THE PIAZZETTA; AND VENICE, A VIEW OF THE MOLO

a pair, both oil on canvas, unlined, in carved and gilt pierced wood frames, with unidentified red wax seals on the reverse
each: 37.8 x 53.9 cm.; 14⅞ x 21¼ in.
(2)

Condition Report:
Both canvases are unlined, with dirty paint surfaces and discoloured varnishes.

The former: There is a pin-prick loss to the left of centre on the upper margin as a result of old woodworm in the stretcher. There are scattered, slightly larger losses through the centre of the sky and in the architecture of the buildings on the right. These areas have suffered previous damage resulting in a more pronounced craquelure leading to the losses and associated retouching. There is older and yellowed restoration along the centre of the upper margin. Inspection under ultraviolet light confirms the retouchings visible to the naked eye in the centre of the sky and through the buildings on the right, and revealing some older areas of retouching also scattered throughout the sky and along the left-hand margin. In overall fair condition.

The latter: There are a handful of pin-prick losses in the upper corners caused by historic woodworm in the stretcher, and three very minor losses in the sky above Santa Maria della Salute. Old, discoloured retouchings are visible throughout the sky, and a couple of more recent retouchings are found in the left part of the sky where the craquelure has become more pronounced. These are all confirmed under ultraviolet light, which further reveals retouching in the heads of the two fighting boys in the foreground. In overall good condition.
