FOLLOWER OF SIR ANTHONY VAN DYCK
Portrait of a gentleman, head and shoulders, his right arm upon his breast

oil on canvas
54.5 by 53.4cm.; 21½by 17in.

Condition Report:
The canvas is lined, and the paint surface is relatively dirty with a discoloured varnish. There is a slight degree of wear throughout. Tiny spots and fine lines of discoloured retouching are visible in the sitter's flesh tones to disguise the appearance of craquelure. There are a handful of pin-prick losses resulting from the distinct craquelure, notably one at the top of the sitter's proper left cheek bone. There is a small, restored damage in the background upper right approx. 1 x 1 cm. Inspection under ultraviolet light is impeded by the thick, milky varnish which fluoresces opaquely but there does not appear to be any further intervention to what is visible to the naked eye. In overall fairly good condition.

"In response to your inquiry, we are pleased to provide you with a general report of the condition of the property described above. Since we are not professional conservators or restorers, we urge you to consult with a restorer or conservator of your choice who will be better able to provide a detailed, professional report.
