FOUR PLATES

Lunéville, circa 1766.
Faience ("terre de pipe") decorated in overglaze enamels. Eight-lobed form painted in purple camaïeu with fine landscape vignettes depicting Watteauesque scenes after engravings by Johann Esaias Nilson representing the months of the year. Unmarked.
Ø 20.5 cm.

Provenance:
- Galerie Vandermeersch, Paris.
- Peter Ducret Collection, Kilchberg; acquired from the above in 1983.

The designs are based on Augsburg engravings by Johann Esaias Nilson dating from 1766 (Schuster nos. 102, 105, 117, 120). According to Peter Ducret, the decoration may have been executed by Louis Victor Gerverot (1747–1829) as Hausmaler work. The renowned painter, trained at Sèvres and originally from Lunéville, left France as early as 1766/67 and subsequently worked at German and Dutch manufactories.
