FRAMED A CHRISTMAS MEMORY LEAF, TRUMAN CAPOTE AND COUSIN SOOK AS SEEN IN ARCHITECTURAL DIGEST 1976

[ translate ]

A framed leaf carrying a halftone photograph of Truman Capote as a small boy standing beside his cousin Sook Faulk in a light dress on a porch, his hand at her arm. The image sits within a printed border drawn in pen and ink with scrolling lines, a whisk, bottles, a cake stand, a cut cake and other kitchen items, and beneath it a caption engraved in copperplate script: "The author, at seven, with his friend, with whom he shared the excitement of fruitcake weather and about whom he wrote 'The Grass Harp' and this Christmas memory". The wording and the decorated border are those of a published edition of A Christmas Memory rather than of a photographic print. Set behind glass in a molded giltwood frame, the back closed with brown board on two rings. The same frame is visible in Horst P. Horst's photographs of the Sagaponack living room, published in Vogue, 1 November 1965. The same photograph, cropped closer, was used on the jacket of the United Artists record of Capote reading The Thanksgiving Visitor, offered in this sale.

Condition: the leaf toned overall to a warm brown with foxing and damp staining across the sheet, heaviest at the upper left and through the image, and a horizontal crease. The caption remains fully legible. The frame rubbed at the corners with losses to the gilding; the backing board worn and its easel strut detached but present.

Approx. Dimensions: the frame 7 " x 6 "

Artist or Maker: Unknown photographer; the leaf from a published edition

Provenance: Truman Capote; Gerald Clarke, his biographer
Literature: Vogue, 1 November 1965, "Truman Capote's Living Room," photography by Horst P. Horst.

This lot is part of The Magpie and the Swans: The Possessions of Truman Capote, collected over a lifetime between New York and Sagaponack, and preserved since 1984 by his biographer, Gerald Clarke.

Notes: Although care is taken to photograph and describe the item, absence of a condition report does not imply perfect condition. It is the responsibility of the buyer to verify the condition of the item, either in person or by requesting a condition report.

Appeal: a christmas memory, the grass harp, miss sook, sook faulk, monroeville alabama, childhood photograph, halftone plate, book plate, framed print, fruitcake weather, american literature, literary memorabilia, truman capote
