FRANCE Fin du XVIIIe siècle

PAIR OF CANDELABRARIES FOR "WOMEN IN ANTIQUE"
circa 1800
Gilt bronze and patina, white
marble H. 110 cm, W. 40 cm
This pair of five-light candelabra presents two young women dressed in antique style in patinated bronze with a beautiful quality of cast iron and chasing. Each of them holds in her hands a long finely twisted horn of plenty in gilt bronze from which emerges a bouquet of flowers and foliage. The whole composition rests on a cylindrical white marble base decorated with garlands and attributes of comedy and gardening.
This very beautiful model of candelabra was a considerable success during the reign of Louis XVI, given the elegance and sobriety inspired by Antiquity that emerges from it. The Musée du Louvre keeps in its collections a version close to the one we present, although the difference in the model of the arm-lights is to be noted (fig.
1). The Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris has a drawing showing this type of candelabrum where a young woman carries a horn of plenty from which the arms of light emerge (fig. 2). It is possible that this drawing comes from the catalogue of the famous merchant Dominique
Daguerre, thus attesting to the originality and creativity of this model that he was to present to his rich clientele of the time. Automatically translated by DeepL. To see the original version, click here.
