FRANCESCO FURINI | ARTEMISIA

[ translate ]

Property from a Private West Coast Collection
FRANCESCO FURINI
Florence 1604 - 1646
ARTEMISIA

oil on canvas
28¾ by 23¾ in.; 73 by 60.3 cm.

Condition Report:
The canvas has an old lining and is stable on its stretcher. The reverse of the canvas shows two patches that back old repaired tears at upper center in the red bow and lower right in the blue cloak draped around her arm. There is one small puncture near the center of the left edge with some small associated losses. There are a few more scattered losses concentrated near the edges, including one near the center of the right edge. The image reads well beneath an old and slightly dulled varnish. It is slightly dirty, and some elements have been slightly pressed over time. Some restorations are visible to the naked eye, including the aforementioned repairs, one repair in her upper chest, one on her shoulder at left, a fine vertical line in the upper left corner, a spot to the upper right of her head, and to some areas in her flesh tones. Inspection under UV further reveals a thick and uneven varnish, some spots of restoration in her face, some areas in the shadowed part of her face at right as well as in the shadowed background just to the right of her face, as well as some generous strokes in her arm. There are also a few fine strokes of retouching to address some of the canvas weave in her flesh tones. Offered in a simply carved giltwood frame.

In response to your inquiry, we are pleased to provide you with a general report of the condition of the property described above. Since we are not professional conservators or restorers, we urge you to consult with a restorer or conservator of your choice who will be better able to provide a detailed, professional report.
