FRANK EARLE SCHOONOVER (AMERICAN, 1877-1972) OIL ON CANVAS, 1924, H 16.25", W 35", "THE WITCH MEN OF BIZY" A prolific member of the Brandywine School, American illustrator Frank Earle Schoonover contributed more than 5,000 adventure paintings to magazines during the "Golden Age of Illustration." The location of this painting has been unknown until recently discovered at an estate sale in the South Eastern Michigan area.Artist's signature and date to the lower left. Label to verso reads: "Heading for - "The Witch Men of Bizy" - no. 1311 - July - 1924 "Showing it tous (?) Mitch Meer." Having canvas number 1311 and date July 1924 to stretcher. Frame measures H 16.75" x L 35.5". Published: Detzer, Karl W. “Witch Men of Bizy.” The American Boy, February 1925: 3. Caption: "Some said there were five, some seven, in the band of Witch Men, strange, half-civilized marauders."

Condition Report: Original canvas, frame, and stretcher. Early, if not the original, varnish. Showing one small evidence of repair or restoration when viewed under UV and Natural light: a H 2.25" x W 1" patch to verso and there is minor fluorescence (2%) to one of the figures on the patch verso.
