In November 1893 Frederic Remington traveled to the Allegheny Mountains in West Virginia with the author and journalist Julian Ralph to document the rural landscape and communities for HarperÕs New Monthly Magazine. RemingtonÕs paintings from this trip were celebrated for their quiet restraint and when considered in contrast with his frenetic depictions of Western life demonstrate his range as an artist. This work depicts a distinguished circuit rider an itinerant preacher who traveled between frontier settlements. It was used as illustration for RalphÕs article ÒWhere Time Has SlumberedÓ in an 1894 edition of HarperÕs New Monthly Magazine and is accompanied by a copy of the article.
Condition Report: Mat burn around all edges extending approx. 1/2 in. from edge on left right and lower sides and approx. 3/4 in from top edge.
