Description:

FRENEAU, PHILIP
Poems written between 1768 & 1794 by Philip Freneau, of New Jersey. A new edition, revised and corrected by the author; including a considerable number of pieces never before published. Monmouth, N.J.: Printed at the press of the author, at Mount-Pleasant, near Middletown-Point, American Independence XIX, 1795. Revised and expanded edition. Contemporary calf, the spine with gilt rules and a red morocco lettering label, the pastedowns with interesting labels (see note), slipcase. 8 1/8 x 4 3/4 inches (20.5 x 12 cm); xv, [1], 455, [9] pp., with half-title, numerous errors in pagination. Collation by signatures: pi^(8) A-B^(4) B-2E^(8) (pi1-2, 2E5-8 blank). The covers detached and with small losses to tips, foxing, a few stray pencil marks and stains, a thin strip cut away from upper margin of two front blanks, likely lacking the rear free endpaper (blanks are part of collation), some toned leaves, ink signature to margin of p. 209 and signatures erased at front.

Philip Freneau is known as the "Poet of the American Revolution." This is the expanded edition of his 1786 The Poems of Philip Freneau Written Chiefly During the Late War. The current edition was the only book of his and the only full-length book printed on Freneau's own press in Monmouth County, New Jersey. Between, in 1788, Freneau's Miscellaneous Works... was published, thus the present edition is his third collection of poems, and is often described as a third edition. A 1771 Princeton graduate, during the American Revolution Freneau was captured and memorialized the experience in The British Prison Ship, one of several war related poems of anti-British sentiment in the volume. Later poems are critical of the early Federal Government and offer glimpses of life in the early republic. This copy bears an interesting early American label printed in French to the front pastedown reading "Ce Livre Est a Moi./Boston" within a decorative printed border. The rear pastedown bears an early American label advertising "Plain and Fancy Job Printing." BAL 6445; Evans 28712; Sabin 25898; Felcone, Printing in New Jersey, 762.
