FRIEDERIKE PEZOLD (*1945) | 'Schamwerk', Vienna 1974
Image Size: 11.7 x 11.9 cm

English

Vintage gelatin silver print, flush-mounted on the original paper support 29.5 x 20.8 cm, in very good condition. Image outlined with pencil by the artist.
Schamwerk' forms part of the artist’s significant series 'The New Embodied Sign Language'. In the 1970s, Pezold used her own body as an artistic medium to challenge traditional representations of the female body and to explore themes such as identity, body awareness and self-determination. Alongside her performances and video works, she produced carefully conceived photographs, which should be understood as works in their own right rather than merely as documentation of her performances. Original prints and video stills are now held in major international museums and collections, including the Centre Pompidou in Paris.
