London: Faden, July 1st, 1778.
14 1/2” x 21 3/4” sheet, 23” x 30” framed.

Fought on 21 September 1777, Washington, upon retreating from the Battle of Brandywine, left a force commanded by "Mad" Anthony Wayne to harass the British as they marched to occupy Philadelphia. The British, however, led a midnight attack on the Americans, depicted in this battle plan. "Detailed plan of the encampment of the British and Hessian troops identified by unit, and Wayne's American force in ambush. The line of march of the British under Grey and Musgrave during their night attack and bayonet charge (familiarly known as the 'Paoli Massacre') are indicated, as is the direction of the Americans' retreat westward" (Nebenzahl, Bibliography of Printed Plans of the American Revolution).
