Far-East Photograph Album 1870's measuring 12" x 15.5" x 2.5" exhibiting lacquered covers with gilt decorative scenes on front and back covers of a Japanese court scene. Interior pages measure 11.75" x 15". Album contains 74 mounted albumin photographs ranging in size from 3.5" x 5.5" up to 8.5" x 33.5". Subjects matter includes buildings and foreign settlement region in Canton, China, areas of Hong Kong, and areas of Japan as well as images showing damage to Canton after tornado in the 1870's. Album includes several folded panoramic photographs of Amoy (now known as Xiamen) China and Hong Kong. Album contains several images of foreign (Western) businessmen and their families during leisure time and at parties. Album also includes numerous portraits of Japanese men, women, musicians, modes of travel, Sumo wrestlers, execution scenes and other images. Album also contains 6-cabinet card photographs of Japanese women and a castle scene. Album lacks spine and exhibits damage to both front and back covers (cracking, chipping and losses).
