Federal Carved Mahogany Easy Chair, Philadelphia, late 18th century, the serpentine crest rail above shaped sides and outward-scrolling arms, with slightly serpentine front rail joining molded square tapering legs, ht. 45 1/4, seat ht. 17 1/2 in.
Provenance: History in the family of Henry Knox. Knox was senior general of the Continental Army and was appointed by George Washington as the First United States Secretary of War. The chair was purchased at an auction in Maine, to which it was consigned by the Knox Museum in Thomaston, Maine.
