The shield back with intricately carved splat.

Based on plate 7 of George Hepplewhite's The Cabinet-Maker and Upholsterer's Guide (1796), this chair follows similar examples illustrated in the following publications: Garvan, Federal Philadelphia, 1785-1825: The Athens of the Western World, plate 16; American Furniture and Decorative Arts from the Watson Collection, plate 6; and Hornor, Blue Book of Philadelphia Furniture, plates 381 and 383. The stop-fluted legs, serpentine front, and pierced lower bracket on the splat of this chair are impressive details to be found on one example.
