\Artist: Ferdinand Gueldry (1858-1945)
Technique: Oil on canvas\Signature: Not signed\Dimensions: 51_43_4_cm
Ferdinand GUELDRY (1858-1945) "Notre-Dame de la Clarté, Perros-Guirec" Remarkable painting by Ferdinand GUELDRY representing the inside of Notre-Dame de la Clarté (Perros-Guirec, Côtes d'Armor) . Made around 1908-1909, it is a preparatory work for the monumental painting (206 x 138 cm) exhibited at the Salon des artistes français in 1909 entitled "Pêcheurs ploumanakais dans la chapelle de la Clarté, Côtes du Nord". The latter is currently in the Museum of Fine Arts of Quimper. The work we are selling has also been exhibited, it has a lacunar label on the stretcher dated 1930, we have also found a passage in a New York auction room in 1944 where an exhibition in Versailles was mentioned. A pupil of Jean-Léon GÉRÔME, Ferdinand GUELDRY is a highly sought-after painter, particularly for his rowing and canoeing scenes, which can exceed €100,000 at auction, frequently around €20,000 - €30,000. His masterpieces are almost all the property of museums, such as "L'ecluse de Molesey" at the Museum of Nogent-sur-Marne. He produced little (about 200 paintings known to date) , focusing on the production of high quality paintings meant to be exhibited at different salons, including the Salon des Artistes français where he presented his works 54 times between 1878 and 1938, being rewarded 4 times! He was made a Knight of the Legion of Honour in 1908. Meticulous and demanding, in search of perfect compositions (hence the considerable amount of work done beforehand) , he devotes a great deal of time to the elaboration of his major canvases, which are, moreover, large formats, regularly acquired by the French State. He stopped painting in 1938 and spent the last years of his life in Switzerland. Here you have the opportunity to acquire a work by this rare and oh so talented artist, a superb preparatory work for a museum painting, which has been the subject of exhibitions and which will be included in the painter's catalogue raisonné! Oil on canvas 73 x 54 cm - Sold without frame (We will offer the buyer the original frame, which measures approximately 88 x 69 cm, which has some missing parts and a "GUELDRY" cartouche) Unsigned Excellent general condition, on its original canvas On the reverse, stamp "L. BESNARD Paris", usual supplier of the painter, as well as an exhibition label on the stretcher Authenticity guaranteed - Sold with our gallery invoice This painting will be included in the catalogue raisonné of Ferdinand GUELDRY, which our gallery is currently preparing (We authenticate GUELDRY's works for Sotheby's and other auction rooms) Worldwide secure shipment!
