[ translate ]

Title: Love and Romances in the Lives of Famous People.

Author: Ferdynand Hoesick (1867–1941) [writer, literary historian, musicologist, bookseller, and publisher; co-editor of *Kurier Warszawski*].

Publisher: Warsaw; Kraków, Published by J. Czarnecki’s Bookstore.

Year of publication: [1923]. Second edition, revised and corrected.

Format: 22 cm.

Volume: p. IX, 285.

Binding: original paperback cover, publishing-grade paper.

The book belongs to a genre in Hoesick’s writing in which literary biography meets a study of social customs. The author examines the emotional lives of artists and historical figures. Among the subjects are Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, Zygmunt Krasiński, Fryderyk Chopin, Ludwig van Beethoven, Emperor Wilhelm I, King Jan III Sobieski, and Adam Asnyk. The first edition was published in Warsaw by Gebethner and Wolff as Volume 2 of *The Writings of Ferdynand Hoesick* (1917; some sources list 1918). The present second edition, revised and corrected, was published around 1923 jointly in Warsaw and Kraków, during the early years of the Second Polish Republic. In one antiquarian catalog, the title appears in the section on historical and literary erotica.

Ferdynand Hoesick was born in 1867 in Warsaw to a family of booksellers and publishers. Beginning in 1884, he studied at the technical universities in Riga and Heidelberg; from 1888 to 1890, he studied the history of literature at Jagiellonian University; and he completed his education at the Sorbonne and the Collège de France. In 1900, he took over his father’s book and publishing company, which had been founded in 1865 and remained in operation until June 1940. From 1924, he was co-editor of *Kurier Warszawski*, and in 1934, he co-founded the Fryderyk Chopin Institute. He began his literary career with publications on Słowacki, Krasiński, and Chopin. The three-volume *Chopin: Life and Creative Path” (1910–1911), published by his own bookstore, secured him a lasting place in Chopin studies. He also wrote the four-volume “The Tatra Mountains and Zakopane” (1920–1931). He was criticized for his tendency to bring details from private life to the forefront, which became a subject of ridicule in the satirical press. He died in Warsaw in 1941.

Provenance: a piece without ownership inscriptions or institutional stamps.

A must-have for collectors of early biographical works and the history of Polish literature, scholars of Hoesick’s oeuvre, and bibliophiles who appreciate interwar pamphlets in good condition. A light-hearted yet source-based account of the romantic lives of great figures, in its original publisher’s cover.

The original stiff paper publisher’s cover is in very good condition: clean, with no paper loss, stains, or deep tears in the flexible spine. The block is compact and stable, the original stitching is intact, and the pages are even. The paper has good stiffness, is clean, and bears a patina natural for the 1920s: a few small foxing spots, acid discoloration, and superficial soiling along the margins, without impairing the legibility of the text. The complete set of cards from the J. Czarnecki Bookstore’s publication brochure is preserved. There are 12 pieces in the set.
