Fetish - Wood - Bochio - Ewe - Togo

[ translate ]

The ‘bochio’ sculptures are made by the tribes of the Fon and the Ewe (in today's Benin and Togo / West Africa) . They are frequently rather crudely carved pieces, which captivate precisely because of their aesthetic imperfections and simplistic design. They stand in village squares or in front of a house entrance and are periodically given offerings. They are protective figures, which draw evil to themselves, acting as a lightning rod and keeping it away from the people. Being offered for sale is a large post figure in the characteristic Ewe style, expressive in its simplicity. Matt red-brown patina, mounted on a metal base. With good provenance. Ex Galerie Kirbach, Düsseldorf (DE) From the Karl Heinz Krieg collection, Neukirchen (DE) . For collection only! Shipping may be available on request.
