Figure (1) - Wood - LUENA - Chokwe - Angola

Exquisite old figure, hard wood, beautiful patina from use. The Luena people live in Angola, and as they are neighbours of the Chokwe, they share lots of cultural characteristics, including their art. The Luena and the Chokwe both use masks to honour feminine ancestors, and the latter are prominent with Luena craftsmanship. The Luena also create feminine figures, similar to those of the Chokwe, but with a more serene appearance, often topped with a distinctive hatched hairdo. Their use is misunderstood, women are highly valued among the Luena and may even reach the rank of chief.
