This beautiful, and rare, statue in Flemish earthenware shows Jesus Christ with the sacred heart, which with fire and crown of thorns is a symbol of his life and suffering. Jesus, with a halo, looks directly at the viewer and has his arms spread in a gesture of welcome and embrace, representing the universal love and grace he offers to all who come to him.
The statue is finished with glaze in rather dark colors, which is slightly crackled.
The veneration of the Sacred Heart dates back to the 13th century and probably has its origins in the Gospel of John, where a lance pierces the side of the crucified Christ. This statue is a beautiful example of this age-old devotion.
The statue is in good condition with normal signs of wear.
