Fine 6th C. Pre-Viking Silver Buckle

[ translate ]

Northern Europe, Scandinavia, pre-Viking period (often called Migration period or Germanic Iron Age), ca. 6th to 7th century CE. A petite silver buckle comprised of a square plate folded in half and riveted together to form two attachment loops, a prong, and a ring that forms a bar for the belt strap to pass through. The two rivets likely attached this buckle to a leather belt. Although a utilitarian artifact - minimalist and functional - this piece being made from silver indicates a degree of wealth of the owner. Provenance: private Carmichael, California, USA collection, acquired in the 1990s

All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.

A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.
