Fine Coptic Bone Spoon & Tool

Egypt, Coptic culture, ca. 4th to 7th century CE. A fascinating pair of tools skillfully hand-carved from the bone of an ungulate. The first is a spoon featuring a shallow, pointed bowl, a decorative, openwork stem, and an ovoid handle with a trefoil finial. Alternatively, the second example displays a loop at one end and a long tubular stem with a patterned decoration of alternating straight and concave sections, all topped by an ovoid tip and tiered finial. Size (of largest): 6.625" L x 1.375" W (16.8 cm x 3.5 cm)

Provenance: private New York, New York, USA collection, acquired 1990s

Condition Report: A few minor chips to loop instrument. Both have light nicks and abrasions, commensurate with age. Otherwise, both are excellent with nice patina and light earthen deposits.
