Fine Greek Apulian Glazed Pottery Trefoil Oinochoe

Magna Graecia, South Italic Colonies, Apulia, ca. 340 to 325 BCE. A beautiful wheel-thrown pottery oinochoe (pouring vessel) with a petite foot, an apple-shaped body with a rounded shoulder, a cylindrical neck that gently flares into a trefoil-style pouring spout, and an applied strap handle that arches between rim and shoulder. The entire vessel - save areas just above and beneath the foot - are enveloped in lustrous glaze of a jet-black color, and traces of silvery iridescence have formed across some glazed surfaces. A gorgeous example of fine Apulian artistry! Size: 3.8" W x 6.2" H (9.7 cm x 15.7 cm).

Provenance: ex-William Froelich collection, New York, USA, acquired in the 1970s

Condition Report: Repaired from multiple large pieces, with areas of restoration to body, and resurfacing and overpainting along break lines. Minor abrasions to foot, body, and rim, with light encrustations. Light earthen deposits throughout, and traces of silver iridescence in scattered areas.
