Fine Inca Blackware Figural Aryballos - Hunchback

[ translate ]

Pre-Columbian, North Central Peru, Inca, ca. 1470 to 1523 CE. A superb example of a hand-built pottery aryballos with a narrow but stable base, a flared lower body, a bulbous upper body with a rounded shoulder, a pair of semicircular loop handles, and a projecting neck with a flared rim. Atop the shoulder is an effigy of an anthropomorphic figure with slender arms extending from narrow shoulders and a prominently hunched back bulge behind the cylindrical neck. The highly stylized countenance presents with puffy, almond-shaped eyes, a perky nose above deep nasolabial folds, and tab-shaped ears, all beneath a thick-brimmed 'headdress' which doubles as the vessel's rim. The highly burnished vessel exhibits a jet-black hue characteristic of quality Incan pottery artistry. Size: 7.7" W x 9.625" H (19.6 cm x 24.4 cm)

Provenance: private Colorado Springs, Colorado, USA collection acquired from Arte Xibalba, Florida, private Ross collection, Sarasota, FL before 1990

All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.

A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.
