Fine Roman Gold Chain Necklace w/ Boss Medallion Clasp

[ translate ]

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 2nd to 3rd century CE. This is a lovely necklace made from high quality 80% gold (equivalent to 19K+) comprised of a chain and medallion hook clasp. The medallion boss is the main decorative focal point, formed from a sheet of gold, hammered flat then molded into discoidal with a convex boss decorated with applied double spirals and braided roped twist wires. This medallion also serves as the clasp: the verso is welded to a thick wire bent into a loop to receive the hook attached to the terminal tip of the chain. The chain links are each made from a thick wire loop that is folded in half then slightly pinched in the middle to create twisted, interlocking, figure-8 shapes. This necklace is in excellent condition and is still wearable! Size (necklace): 15.25" L (38.7 cm); (boss): 0.75" Diameter (1.9 cm); gold quality: 80% (equivalent to 19K+); weight: 10.9 grams
