Fine Satsuma kōro 香炉 (incense burner) with openwork lid - Satsuma - Ceramic - Japan - Meiji period (1868-1912) Finely painted Japanese Koro. Three large vignettes, of ladies on a balcony with lake scene including fish and leisure boat, multilayered Shangrila style landscape with boaters, people crossing a bridge and Mt. Fuji like mountain in the distance, and chickens and chrysanthemums respectively, within complex gilt and enamel borders, openwork chrysanthemum petal lid, Loss and wear commensurate with great age. The Koro body is in excellent condition. No chips, cracks or repairs detected. Paintings still vivid and highly detailed. Top part of Koro rim features two, extremely tiny inner rim frits. Almost impossible to see under natural circumstances. Rim of top cover features two edge hairlines. Does not distract from the beauty of the piece.
