Fine Viking Iron Shears

Northern Europe, Viking or Norse culture, ca. 8th to 10th century CE. A wonderful set of Viking shears with a pair of offset triangular blades connected via two rod-form arms. The arms taper inward and are attached to an ovoid central body which enables the blades to be squeezed together to sever softer materials like leather, textiles, and hair. Size: 9" L x 1.8" W (22.9 cm x 4.6 cm).

Provenance: private Ventura County, California, USA collection; ex-Eduard Formberg collection, Kaniera, Latvia, found near Grobina, Latvia, in a field using a metal detector

Condition Report: Minor chips to blade tips and bodies, rods, and ovoid body, with age-commensurate oxidation and chipping, and slight bending to overall form, otherwise intact and very good. Great iron patina throughout.
