First (5) Cosmonauts Signed Vintage Soviet Photo Postcard: Gagarin, Titov, Nikolayev, Popovich, Bykovsky!
SP
A vintage Soviet photo postcard boldly signed by the first five cosmonauts in Space: Yuri Gagarin (1934-1968), Gherman Titov (1935-2000), Andriyan Nikolayev (1929-2004), Pavel Popovich (1930-2009), and Valery Bykovsky (1934-2019). Ca. 1966. [Moscow, Soviet Union.] Signed in Cyrillic letters in blue and black ink. The postcard image shows eleven cosmonauts seated and standing in two rows, including our five signers. The postcard back is blank, with printed caption, publication, copyright, and retail cost information. Gently toned and with a few scattered scuffs, else near fine. 5.75" x 4.125".
The Soviet Union launched its Vostok space program in 1961, conducting six missions - and achieving many firsts - during the next two years. Cold War anxieties fueled the simultaneous development of highly competitive space programs in the United States and the Soviet Union. The two ideologically opposed juggernauts flexed their muscle in many ways, from the nuclear arms race to the Space Race.
The signers include (with signatures in order of appearance, top to bottom, left to right):
- Yuri Gagarin was the first cosmonaut and first man in space. He manned the Vostok I space capsule on April 12, 1961, making a full orbit around Earth lasting 108 minutes before parachuting into the atmosphere at 23,000 feet.
- Gherman Titov led the Vostok II space mission, lasting a full day, on August 6, 1961, becoming the second cosmonaut and fourth man in space.
- Valery Bykovsky became the fifth cosmonaut and eleventh man to reach outer space with his June 14, 1963 Vostok V space flight, which, at over 4 days, was the longest solo orbital flight thus undertaken.
- Pavel Popovich, pilot of the Vostok IV, became the fourth cosmonaut and eighth man in space on August 12, 1962.
- Andriyan Nikolayev, commander of Vostok III, became the third cosmonaut and seventh man in space upon completion of his August 11, 1962 space flight.
