Archive

A small dealer's lot of autographed material relating to two of the most elegant First Ladies of the twentieth century: Lady Bird Johnson (1912-2007) and Nancy Reagan (1921-2016).

The lot is comprised of:

1. A 1p typed letter signed by Lady Bird Johnson as "Lady Bird Johnson" near lower right. December 29, 1964. [Washington, D.C.] On a leaf of watermarked stationery with "The White House / Washington" embossed underneath a blind-embossed presidential seal at top. Expected light wear including transmittal folds, else near fine. 6.25" x 9.5." Lady Bird Johnson thanked William J. McManus (1900-1998), the future treasurer of the Republican National Committee, for a birthday orchid. Lady Bird had turned 52 years old a week earlier, on December 22, 1964.

2. A movie still press photograph signed by Nancy Reagan as "Nancy Reagan" and cosigned by her costar Gary Merrill as "Gary Merrill" near bottom center. N.d., n.p. The black and white glossy photograph is signed in the negative at lower right, and labeled with a manuscript sticker verso. Expected wear including slight curling and a minor water stain affecting the bottom edge, else near fine. 8" x 10." The photograph depicts a scene from the 1958 Columbia Pictures action movie, "Crash Landing," in which Reagan (listed as Nancy Davis) and Merrill survive a passenger airline's emergency ditching at sea.

This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
