Flemish School 16th century - St Hubert, Patron Saint of Hunters

[ translate ]

Flemish School 16th century

St Hubert, Patron Saint of Hunters

Oil on panel. 42.5 x 35 cm.

This depiction of St Hubert praying in a forest landscape was prepared through intensive study of nature. The lush, partly shaded, partly brightly lit foliage is rendered in subtle tones. The contrast between Hubert's intense adoration of the crucifix between the stag's horns and the turmoil around him - the hunter with his horse running into the left of the picture and the dog running in the direction of the viewer - heightens the tension in the work.

As evidenced by the labels on the back, this panel was shown at one of the eight exhibitions of the Florentine Biennale d'Antiquariato held at the Palazzo Strozzi between 1959 and 1975.

Verso: Two labels in the upper right; the uppermost rectangular, in blue, with remnants of a red stamp, therein inscribed and numbered by hand "Mostra Nazionale Antiquaria / Città di Firenze Palazzo Strozzi / 103". Below it a round brown stamp with the same inscription and number.

Provenance
