Flemish School (18th Century) Diana and Callisto Oil on canvas 9-1/4 x 11-1/2 inches (23.5 x 29.2 cm) Property from the Collection of John Robert Clark The present work depicts the mythological story of Callisto, a nymph in service to the goddess Diana. Despite taking a vow of chastity, Callisto was seduced by Zeus, his presence indicated by the golden eagle at far left, who appeared to her in the form of Diana in order to get close to her, shown in the present scene. Condition Report: Lined canvas. Surface dirt and dust. Finely patterned craquelure with some areas of pigment separation. Slight yellowing to the varnish layer. Not examined out of frame.
Under UV: varnish fluoresces green unevenly. Brushy retouching to the foliage around the edges. A few scattered finely applied dots of retouching to the various figures. An older application of brushy retouching to the sky at upper right.
