Flemish (?) School, 17th century, Portrait of a Gentleman
Flemish (?) School, 17th century
Portrait of a Gentleman
Oil on canvas (relined). 57.5 x 48 cm.
This portrait of an unknown gentleman is reminiscent of 17th century Flemish portraiture, but also displays features typical of the Italian School, especially that of Rome. For example the works of Giovanni Battista Gaulli, who in turn was influenced by the Flemish artists Rubens and Van Dyck. The author of this portrait was perhaps an as-yet unidentified Flemish artist who, like his colleagues Rubens and Van Dyck, also undertook a longer stay in Italy.
