The composition of this elegant copper panel derives from a work by Rubens which was disseminated in printed form throughout Europe in an engraving by Schelte á Bolswert. The Rubens workshop was commissioned to paint this large altarpiece for the Antwerp Jesuit church by the mayor of Rockox (auctioned by Lempertz Cologne, 19.11.2011, lot 1239).
