Flemish school; 17th century.
‘Martyrdom of a Saint’.
Oil on oak panel.
Measurements: 23 x 18 cm.

In this concrete case the scene presents a composition, of great theatricality and full of narrative details, it tries above all to move the spirit of the faithful showing him the defencelessness of the saint in front of the cruelty to which he is being submitted. This can be seen in his expressive face and the posture of his body. All the figures are arranged in the foreground. This characteristic allows for greater clarity in the reading of the work due to its centred position and clarity, a feature that is intensified by the use of colour and luminosity given the body of Christ. In terms of composition and theme, the work is largely reminiscent of depictions of Christ tied to the column, although the dagger thrust into the protagonist's eye indicates that this is not Jesus, as it is not typical of the iconography of this passage from the Passion of Christ.
The monumentality of both the figures that make up the scene and the background on which it is inscribed stand out. The figures are rounded and forceful, with muscular bodies, both in the figures flanking the figure of the protagonist. With regard to the background, the dimensions of the architecture in general and of the column in particular are in harmony with the figures.
