Flemish school, ca. 1620.
Flemish school, ca. 1620.
"Male portrait".
Oil on canvas.
In good condition, except for slight Repainting.
With its period frame.
Measurements: 52,5 x 43 cm; 68 x 58 cm (frame).
The portrait was one of the most important genres in Flemish painting of the seventeenth century. In the capture of the personality of this gentleman or aristocrat that we show the teaching of masters like Rembrandt or Frans Hals is ratified. The arched eyebrows print subtle wrinkles on the forehead, clear and framed by thinning gray hair. The mustache and beard trimmed like a goatee stylizes the countenance. The eyes denote haughtiness and suspicion. The white light falls on the pleated ruff, and from that center the illumination is wisely distributed to different areas of the painting. The rosy flesh tones have been resolved with the utmost naturalism. In short, the painter, well acquainted with the great portraitists of his circle, manages to capture the spontaneity of expression, avoiding any idealization.
