Lieberman states, "In the 1940s the exigencies of war conspired to force friendships between European artists who refugeed in New York, collaborated in portfolios such as the present publication. The two most remarkable were the Brunidor and VVV albums. Today, thirty years later, Chagall, Lam, Masson, Miro and Motherwell once again participate in such an effort. They are joined by other artists who were either also refugees during World War II or beneficiaries of a tradition which remained unbroken largely due to the rescue of a significant segment of the European cultural community."Provenance: Private Collection, Tryon, North Carolina
