\Artist: Flora Scales (1887-1985)
Technique: Oil on canvas\Signature: Hand signed
Helen Flora Victoria Scales (1887-1985) was a well-known artist from New Zealand. She was born in 1887 in Lower Hutt, Wellington, New Zealand. Scales returned to New Zealand after living in England for four years and continued to paint and exhibit occasionally. In 1928, her father died, leaving her a small inheritance that allowed her to concentrate on painting. Scales travelled to Europe again in 1928, where she worked for a while at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière. Dissatisfied with the education at the academy, Scales travelled to Munich, where she attended Hans Hofmann's art academy, and during the winter of 1931-32 studied Hofmann's principles of Modernism with Edmund Kinzinger. In 1934, she returned to New Zealand. The work offered here shows a man with a cart and horses moving cargo through the dunes. The painting is signed in the lower left corner. Dimensions canvas: 50 x 75 cm. The painting is framed in a handmade frame with ornaments. This work comes from a private collection. The painting can be viewed during opening hours of Art Dumay or by appointment.
