Florence Harding On First Post-Election Visit to Washington, "making ready for what lies ahead"
TLS

A lengthy typed letter from First Lady-elect Florence Harding, following the couple's first post-election trip to Washington. 2p of a bifolium, measuring 5.5" x 6.75", Marion, OH, December 9, [1920]. Signed in full as "Florence Kling Harding", she describes a "gorgeous welcome" and packed schedule in preparation for her husband's presidential transition. Paperclip indentations present in the upper margins, with faint mounting traces on the verso of last page. Gentle toning and edge soiling. Else, very good.

From The Doug Wertman Collection.

In full:

"It was wondrously kind of you to send me such a gorgeous welcome to Washington the other day. I did enjoy the beautiful flowers immensely, and I wish you to know that I do appreciate all the lovely thought you have taken of me.
I regret that I did not get to see you while there, but every instant was filled, and every engagement overlapped. I am looking forward to seeing you when I come again.
We had a marvelous trip and come safely to our own home Wednesday noon, to plunge immediately into the real business of making ready for what lies ahead.
Mr. Harding joins me in cordial good wishes to you and Mr. Hammond.
P.S. I must ask indulgence for a typed letter. I have a staggering accumulation of correspondence, as I feel sure you will appreciate, and my secretarial habit is about the most helpful one I acquired during the campaign."

The Hardings arrived in Washington for their first official visit on December 5, 1920. As a still active member of Congress, the President-Elect delivered his farewell speech in the Senate Chamber and held a press conference where he confirmed that a special session of Congress would be called following his inauguration. Notably, Florence Harding met with First Lady Edith Wilson to receive a personal tour of the White House.

This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
