Beautiful six panel byobu-screen with a classical polychrome anonymous painting of various white and pink blooming chrysanthemum plants growing on the banks of a brook with deep blue water, the flowers at the right grow behind a wickerwork fence. Late Edo period. This painting brings up a well-known story in the Chinese Taoist manual "Baopuzi". Each year during the Chrysanthemum Festival in autumn, chrysanthemum flowers would fall into a brook in a valley in China. It is believed that the villagers living in that valley grew very old because they drank the water that the flowers had fallen into. In Taoism, chrysanthemum flowers in water, or saké, has a beneficial effect on one's health and can extend one's life. With a brocade beige border with flower motive. The brocade borders has some signs of age and ware. The painting itself is in very nice original condition with some very light traces of age.
