Note:
Though French-born, Pesne served as a painter to the Prussian court and produced many portraits of the royal family and key court figures, including of the first two Kings of Prussia, Frederick I and Frederick William I. The present work bears similarities to the portrait attributed to Pesne of 'Frederick II of Prussia, later Frederick the Great', in the UK's Royal Collection [RCIN 405262].
